Mike Mayer joined Indiana University as the men’s golf head coach in 1998. Since joining the program, Mayer has propelled Indiana golf to the top of the Big Ten Conference and made the program a regular competitor in the NCAA tournament. Off the field, Mayer’s team is one of the best in the classroom, with Indiana Men’s Golf posting a perfect multi-year Academic Progress Rate score of 1000.
Throughout his tenure, Mayer has had 14 players receive All-Big Ten honors. Mayer has claimed numerous tournament titles, including having 11-straight seasons with at least one tournament victory (2002-14). Under Mayer, Indiana has placed as high as No. 4 in the country (2009) and has produced professional athletes such as current PGA Tour member Jeff Overton (2002-05), European Tour competitor Jorge Campillo (2005-09), and Mackenzie Tour competitor David Mills (2010-14).
Mayer spent nine seasons at Indiana as an assistant coach under Sam Carmichael, taking over the men’s program in the fall of 1998. Under Carmichael, Mayer was part of two Big Ten Championships and a trip to the NCAA championships.
Indiana golfers under Mayer have earned approximately 80 Academic All-Big Ten honors, including a program record eight in 2004, 2005, 2011 and 2012. Additionally, 13 Hoosiers have been recognized as All-America Scholars.
Mayer has brought in three of the top four IU golfers of all-time in terms of lowest career stroke average. The top three single-season averages also belong to Mayer recruits.
Mayer is a 1987 graduate of Indiana University, earning his bachelor’s degree in journalism and English. Mayer went on to earn his master’s degree in sports management from IU in 1998.
Mayer married the former Kimberly Collier on July 26, 2005. The couple have two children, Zachary Collier and Ty Mayer.
