Head Coach

Shonda Stanton was named head coach of Indiana Softball in 2017. During her time at IU, Stanton’s squad has claimed the accolades of best start in program history, along with earning a team spot in the USA Today/National Fastpitch Coaching Association (NFCA) Coaches Poll for the first time since 1996.

Before coming to IU, Stanton spent 18 seasons at Marshall University, where she became the winningest coach in program history with 560 victories. While at Marshall, Stanton’s team claimed the program-record season with 42-12. At Marshall, Stanton coached 76 all-conference selections, nine conference Player, Pitcher or Freshman of the Year accolades, 34 NFCA All-Region picks and a four-time All-American in Rachel Folden, along with 9 athletes joining the National Pro Fastpitch League. Stanton’s teams reached national rankings and posted an average GPA of 3.0 in every semester of Stanton’s career and have had 103 named NFCA All-America Scholar-Athlete. 

Stanton has received the honor of being picked Conference USA Coach of the Year and her staff was named NFCA’s Mideast Region Coaching Staff of the Year. 

Prior to coming to Marshall, Stanton coached at IUPUI for the first season as a Division 1 program. Before coming to Indianapolis, Stanton spent two seasons as the head coach of the National Pro Fastpitch team, the Akron Racers.

A UNC Greensboro graduate, Stanton was a four-year starter and led the team to back-to-back Big South Conference championships. Stanton scored 66 runs during her senior campaign, ranking her eighth in the nation.

Kendall Fearn joined the Indiana Softball staff as an assistant coach in 2017 and will work primarily with hitting and outfield. Fearn came to IU from Marshall University, where she coached under Coach Stanton for four seasons. 

While at Marshall, Fearn was part of the National Fastpitch Coaching Association’s 2017 Mideast Region Coaching Staff of the Year, the same year the Thundering Herd posted a program record 42 wins. During her time with Stanton at Marshall, the team posted a winning percentage of .616, the second-best four year run in program history. Under Fearn, the Herd posted a .313 batting average. 

Before coming to Marshall, Fearn spent two seasons coaching at UNLV and one season coaching at Georgia Southern. 

A graduate of UNLV, Fearn was a two-time Mountain West All-Conference pick and started 227 games at first base and third base. Fearn guided UNLV to a NCAA Regional appearance in 2009 and finished her time at UNLV ranked in seven different categories in the record book.

Chanda Bell joined the Indiana Softball staff as an assistant coach in 2017 and is responsible for pitching. Bell comes to Indiana from Marshall University, where she coached under Coach Stanton for four seasons. 

On the staff at Marshall, Bell was part of the National Fastpitch Coaching Association’s 2017 Mideast Region Coaching Staff of the Year, where the team posted a program record of 42 victories and a top 25 ranking in the USA Today/NFCA Coaches Poll. During her time with Stanton at Marshall, the team posted a winning percentage of .616, the second-best four-year run in program history. Bell guided standout pitcher Jordan Dixon to 32 victories in the circle, putting her at third in the country for the 2017 season.

A University of Kentucky graduate, Bell left the Wildcats as the all-time winningest pitcher and was the first in program history to record 200+ strikeouts in her career. She was the first Kentucky pitcher to throw a no-hitter and perfect game. Bell ranks at the top of the UK Softball record book with 910 career strikeouts and owns three of the top four single-season strikeout marks.
