Ray Looze was named the head coach of the Indiana Swimming program in 2002. Under Looze, Indiana has claimed multiple Big Ten titles and has had multiple runs at the NCAA Championships. 

In 2018, Looze was named the College Swimming Coaches Association Coach of the Year after leading the Indiana men’s swimming team to a third-place finish at the NCAA Men’s Championships, the best finish for the Hoosiers in 43 years. Looze has also been named Big Ten Coach of the Year nine times for helping IU swimmers win three NCAA titles, the most for the Indiana program in 45 years.

Looze graduated magna cum laude from the University of Southern California, where he earned a bachelor’s degree in business finance. He later went on to receive his master’s degree from the School of Education at University of Texas at Austin. 

As a student-athlete, Looze was a four time All-American selection in swimming. He finished second in the 400 individual medley at the 1990 NCAA Championships, earning a spot on the 1990 U.S. Goodwill Games team. He finished the 1990 campaign ranked among the world’s best in the 200-meter breaststroke and the 200-meter and 400-meter individual medleys. 

On top of being a standout in the pool, Looze became the first non-football player in USC history to earn GTE/CoSIDA Academic All-American honors and was recognized as the school’s Scholar-Athlete of the Year in 1989. On top of the honors, Looze was also a NCAA Postgraduate Scholarship winner and was recognized as a finalist for the 1989 Rhodes Scholarship and the 1990 NCAA Walter Byers Award. 

Looze is married to his wife, Kandis. The couple have two children, Bryce Ryan and Mackenzie Looze.

Drew Johansen was named the third diving coach in Indiana University history in 2013. During his time at Indiana, Johansen has led Indiana Diving to several accolades at the Big Ten, NCAA, and Olympic levels.

Part of placing 3rd at the 2018 NCAA Championships, Johansen was named the National Diving Coach of the Year and claimed Big Ten Diving Coach of the Year for the second time. The Hoosier diving team had an exceptional showing at the event, scoring a NCAA-best 98 points. Johansen also helped guide the program to their second-straight Big Ten team championship in 2018, the first back-to-back win since 1983-85 and the 26th title in program history. 

In 2012 and 2016, Johansen was named head coach of Team USA for the 2016 Rio Summer Olympics, where multiple Hoosiers were also members, and the 2012 London Summer Olympics, where USA divers took home four medals. In 2015, Johansen was named head coach of the 2015 U.S. World Championship team. Johansen also spent seven years as a U.S. National Team coach, including serving as the head coach of the 2011 World Championship team. Johansen coached the U.S. Diving World Championship team in 2005 and the U.S. Diving Junior World Team in 2002. 

Johansen founded the U.S. Elite Diving Academy in Columbus, Ohio in 2001. Under Johansen’s direction, the Academy won the U.S. Diving Junior Team title in 2005 and the Junior and Senior team title in 2006. Additionally, Johansen has been the head coach and owner of the American School for Diving, a USA Diving Center of Excellence, since 2007. 

Before coming to Indiana, Johansen spent six seasons as the head diving coach at Duke University, where he was part of six ACC titles, along with coaching athletes earning 15 individual ACC titles. In addition to his time at Duke, Johansen has served as head coach at both Illinois State University (1999-2001) and Florida Atlantic University (1991-95). Johansen earned conference coach of the year four times at FAU. He served as a volunteer assistant coach at Ohio State University from 2004-07. 

Johansen is married to his wife, Jenny, and the couple have one daughter, Lina Mei.

Cory Chitwood joined Indiana Swimming and Diving as an assistant coach in 2019.

In his first season with the Hoosiers, Chitwood was part of two 3rd place team finishes (men’s and women’s) at the Big Ten Championships. Athletes collected over 20 medals at the competition. 

Chitwood came to Indiana from his alma mater, Arizona, where he was an associate head coach for the Wildcats for two seasons. Before Arizona, Chitwood held assistant coaching positions at Virginia and LSU. Chitwood has been a national team coach since 2014, and was part of the coaching staff for the 2017 and 2018 World Championships, and the 2016 Team USA vs Big Ten competition. 

As a student-athlete, the Arizona alumnus earned 14 All-American honors and helped the Wildcats win the 2008 NCAA Championships. Chitwood earned three individual titles in the 200 backstroke and was a USA National Team member from 2011-12.

Emily Eaton joined Indiana Swimming and Diving in 2019 as an assistant coach.

During Eaton’s first season, the Hoosiers placed third at the (men’s and women’s) Big Ten Championships, where the team collected over 20 medals. 

Eaton came to Indiana after two seasons at Missouri as the assistant coach and the assistant coach and the program’s director of operations from 2017-19. During her tenure at Missouri, the men’s team finished second in the SEC Championships and 11th at NCAA Championships. Eaton coached 17 All-Americans during her tenure. Before Missouri, Eaton was an assistant coach at Albion College for the 2016-17 season.

Before coaching collegiately, Eaton spent time coaching at the Genesys Athletic Club in Michigan. She started her tenure as an assistant coach in 2012 and was made a head coach in 2014. The club claimed the dual meet championship in 2016. 

As a student-athlete at Grand Valley State in Michigan, Eaton was a three time All-American and still holds top 10 program times in three different events. She earned Collegiate Swimming Coaches Association of American Scholar All-American honors all four years. 

Eaton graduated in 2016 with a bachelor’s of science in secondary education and a triple emphasis in mathematics, health, and physical education.

John Long, JR joined Indiana Swimming and Diving as an assistant coach in 2019.

During his first season, the Hoosiers placed third at the (men’s and women’s) Big Ten Championships, where the team collected over 20 medals. 

Before coming to Indiana, Long was an associate head coach at Queens University of Charlotte for seven seasons. During his tenure, the Royals men’s and women’s teams won the NCAA Division II National Championships in all five seasons. At Queens, Long mentored 86 NCAA event winners, 45 NCAA record setters, nine NCAA Swimmers of the Meet, and three Olympians at the 2016 Rio Games. Before coaching collegiately, Long was an assistant coach for the Aquatic Team of Mecklenburg in Charlotte, North Carolina. 

As a student-athlete, Long swam at the 2012 Olympic Team trials, competed for Queens at the Division II Nationals, and was part of the Division I National Championship team at Auburn University. 

A 2011 Auburn graduate, Long earned a bachelor’s degree in exercise science, and spent time studying HIIT (High Intensity Interval Training) and wrote a senior paper with a study on taper for swimming.

Matt Gearing joined Indiana Swimming and Diving as an assistant coach in 2019. 

During his first season, the Hoosiers placed third at the (men’s and women’s) Big Ten Championships, where the team collected over 20 medals. 

Before coming to Indiana, Gearing coached the Queens University of Charlotte Collegiate Swim Club and was a team manager for the Queens University of Charlotte Men’s and Women’s Swim Team for four years.

Gearing graduated from Queens University of Charlotte in 2019.

Swimming & Diving
The commitment to championship athletics at Indiana University includes providing student-athletes with a quality sports complex. The year 1996 marked the beginning of a new era with the opening of the Counsilman-Billingsley Center in the Student Recreational Sports Center.

Outdoor Pool
With the warmest climate in the Big Ten Conference, Indiana also utilizes its outdoor pool for training purposes. It features a 10-lane, 50-meter pool along with a separate diving well.
