Jeremy Wurtzman was named the head coach of the Indiana Men’s Tennis program in 2014. Wutzman is the 15th head coach of the Indiana program. 

During his premiere season in 2014, Wutzman led the Hoosiers to a 17-1 record, winning their most overall matches and conference matches since 2012-13.

Later in 2015, Wurtzman led the Hoosiers to a fifth place finish in the Big Ten Conference and a Ohio Valley Region Player of the Year.

Before coming to Indiana, Wurtzman spent one season at the University of Michigan, where the Wolverines posted a 16-13 record and a NCAA postseason appearance. 

Before coming to Michigan, Wurtzman was a four-year head coach at the University of Denver Women’s Tennis program (2009-13). At Denver, Wurtzman was named the 2013 Western Athletic Conference Coach of the Year. That year, the Pioneers claimed a 18-4 record and a perfect 8-0 mark in conference play. Wurtzman started his coaching career as an assistant coach for Denver (2006-08). During that time, Denver posted a 31-14 record, qualified for its first ever NCAA appearance, and achieved its highest team ranking of No. 37 in the Intercollegiate Tennis Association rankings.

Before Denver, Wurtzman spent the 2008-09 season at his alma mater, Ohio State, winning a Big Ten regular season championship, the Big Ten Tournament title, and a NCAA finals appearance against USC.

As a professional athlete, Wurtzman played on the ATP World Tour, earned a top-30 American professional singles ranking, captured nine pro circuit doubles titles and was a three-time pro circuit singles finalist. He is a member of the US Tennis Association’s High Performance National team.

As a collegiate athlete, Wurtzman was Ohio State’s first tennis athlete to win an ITA individual championship and went on to win the 2003 ITA Midwest Regional Crown, all before earning the No. 1 singles ranking the following season in 2004. Wurtzman was named All-American, the 2004 ITA/Farnsworth National Senior Player of the Year (co-honoree) and the Midwest Region IV Senior Player of the Year for compiling 42 singles and 30 doubles victories.

Wurtzman ended his career a three-time All-Big Ten selection with 132-45 singles record and an 86-49 doubles record. He received his bachelor’s degree in Science of Human Ecology from Ohio State in 2008.

Mike Murray was named the assistant coach of Indiana Men’s Tennis in 2015. 

For Murray’s premiere season, the Hoosiers finished fifth in the Big Ten conference standings after winning the last five conference games of the season. That same season earned both a First Team All-Big Ten honors and Ohio Valley Region Player of the Year athlete. 

Prior to coming to Indiana, Murray was an assistant coach at Georgia State for July 2014. Previously, he spent two seasons at East Carolina. 

At East Carolina, Murray’s squad posted a 34-13 record, including their first semifinal appearance in 2014, the first ever win over a top-50 program (No. 44 Elon) and the first ever final national ranking at 73. Additionally, Murray saw two student athletes to an invitation to the 2013 NCAA Doubles Championship and another athlete to the 2014 Conference USA Player-of-the-Year Award and an invitation to the 2014 NCAA Singles Championship. 

Prior to his collegiate coaching career, Murray spent five years as the head boys’ and girls’ tennis coach at Forsyth Country Day School in North Carolina. 

Murray graduated from Wake Forest in 2003 after spending four-years as a student-athlete. He still ranks among the all-time top 10 in singles and doubles victories and set the Demon Deacons’ freshman singles record with a team-high 26 wins. He finished his sophomore year as the ACC No. 2 Flight runner-up and ranked as high as No. 60 in the ITA individual rankings. Murray closed out his collegiate career in 2003 with 28 singles wins.

The commitment to excellence at Indiana University is obvious when observing the state-of-the-art facilities that the Hoosiers train and compete on throughout the collegiate tennis season.

With both indoor and outdoor tennis courts, Indiana’s tennis teams are always assured of a quality practice. Located within walking distance of Indiana’s other excellent athletic facilities, the Indiana University Tennis Center and outdoor Varsity Courts have been cited as some of the finest courts in the nation.

The outdoor Varsity Tennis Courts are the primary facility for both the men’s and women’s tennis squads. With a seating capacity of over 600, spectators are assured a quality view of any one of the 10 courts the complex boasts.

During the winter months and periods of rain, the IU Tennis Center is the Hoosiers’ home. With eight courts, locker rooms, and bleacher seating of 300, the indoor facility provides a solid atmosphere for the Hoosiers to train and compete.

Three Indiana men’s tennis students earned academic recognition from the Intercollegiate Tennis Association as ITA Scholar Athletes.

Seniors Matthew McCoy and Stefan Lugonjic as well as freshman Zac Brodney were honored.
