JEFF MERCER

Head Coach

Indiana native Jeff Mercer joined the Indiana Baseball program as head coach prior to the 2019 season. Mercer is widely regarded as one of the top young baseball coaches in the country, and inherited a trailblazing Indiana program.

In his first season at Indiana, Mercer led the Hoosiers to the 2019 Big Ten Regular Season title. Mercer became the first Big Ten head coach since 1982 (John Anderson, Minnesota) to win a regular season conference title in his first season as the skipper. He was the second coach in IU history – in any sport, men’s or women’s – to win an outright Big Ten championship in their first year. Indiana earned a No. 2 seed in the NCAA Tournament, finishing the season with an overall record of 37-23 and a Big Ten mark of 17-7. A school-record 10 Hoosiers were selected in the 2019 Major League Baseball Draft, led by outfielder Matt Gorski, who was selected in the second round (57th overall). Gorski was the highest-drafted Hoosier since Kyle Schwarber in 2014 (1st round, fourth overall).

Before joining the Indiana program, Mercer led the Wright State Raiders for two seasons. In 2018, he was named the Horizon League Coach of the Year.

Mercer earned a reputation as a strong recruiter and talent developer, as well as his innovative use of advanced analytics. In his time at Wright State, Mercer recruited Wright State’s first top 100 ranked recruiting class in program history (2018). WSU posted a 77-38 record (.670; average of 38.5 wins per season), a regular season and conference tournament title, along with an appearance in the 2018 Stanford NCAA Regional, and the program’s first ever national ranking (2017) under Mercer’s lead. In 2018, Wright State saw three players drafted in the MLB Draft. Mercer has developed twelve players he recruited into MLB draft picks since 2015.

Chris Webb, author on 10innings.com said, “He’s an Indiana guy through and through. He is detail oriented and a standup guy. He is going to give the program, the University and the State of Indiana everything he has. He has the ability to bring this program back to the Omaha level.”

Mercer played baseball at Dayton for two years before transferring to Wright State, where he was a two-time first team All-Horizon League honoree as a first baseman. He was named to the Collegiate Baseball Newspaper All-American third team in 2009 after hitting .357 with 26 doubles and 74 RBI. He was also named the Horizon League Player of the Year in 2009 and was named to the league’s All-Tournament team after he tied the WSU single-season records for RBI, doubles, games played and games started. Mercer earned his degree in organizational leadership in 2009, and was the first former Raider to lead the program. Mercer’s father (Jeff Sr.) served as an IU baseball assistant coach from 1988-89 and helped found the noted Indiana Bulls baseball organization.

Mercer resides in Bloomington with his wife, Stephanie and their son Grady.
